Now that's what I call a wheel!

You may remember me asking for feedback regarding reduce, reuse and recycle @ your library. This one wins for me hands down! Congratulations to Judy Atkinson and the team at Coffs Harbour.

"We had a "Recycle" chocolate wheel raffle at our staff meeting. The "wheel" is an old bicycle wheel, and the prizes were all second hand."

Clever eh!

Taking the Message Seriously!

A team of us have just come back from our branch library at Manildra where we've been collecting pictures and stories for our "Manildra Memories" project. There was a wonderful sign on the screen door created, I think, by a local young person (the dinosaurs gave it away). As I was walking back out to the car to retrieve some more equipment I was confronted by the back of the sign and was very amused to note that it had been drawn on the reverse of a reduce, reuse and recycle @ your library poster! That's certainly doing the right thing!

Thinking Green (in a black dress!)

For the green-minded, meet Blackle, the same great Google search engine, in a little black dress: http://blackle.com/ A math whiz figured out how much energy and $$$ might be saved if Google was an all-black page. Blackle folks explain how it works. Worth a try?

What can you do to help save the environment?

How's reduce, reuse and recycle going? As this is a partnership with the Regional Waste Authorities I would really love some feedback as to what you're doing. You might like to check out Central West Libraries Blog to look at an upcoming project, and remember it's not at all bad to copy. http://www.cwl.nsw.gov.au/cwlBlog/client/

A day to highlight links!

If you check the "Great Ideas" section of the reduce, reuse and recycle site you'll find a link to a whole host of relevant web sites (third bullet point down). These would be an excellent resource to highlight during the month.

Beautiful crisp, but sunny day here in Orange. Hope it's good where you are.

Where did these come from?

Some country libraries will have received a "reduce, reuse and recycle" care package via courier; some great pens made from recycled materials. These are a gift from your regional recycling authority. Unfortunately not every authority participated in this project so you may have missed out. Next time.

reduce, reuse & recycle

The first day of a new month and no doubt you've heard someone mutter the traditional "a pinch and a punch for the first day of the month" accompanied by a pinch and (a gentle) punch to the victim. This dates from old England when people thought that witches still existed. It was believed that salt would make a witch weak so the pinch part is for a pinch of salt. She would be so weak from the salt that she could be easily overcome by the punch.

Of course a new month also means a new campaign, "reduce, reuse and recycle". The posters and bookmarks should be with you in the next day or so. Sorry for the delay but we hadn't counted on the mailing house being closed all of last week because of ANZAC day (there's always a trap for young players).

I hope you like the poster. It features a mask made of recycled items bought by Kira from Sauce Design when she was in South Africa a few months ago. It's modelled by "young Ben", another of the team from Sauce who make our life so easy. Both poster and bookmark are on recycled paper.

Have fun thinking about what you can do this month.

reduce, reuse & recycle

Our next campaign is reduce, reuse and recycle @ your library. The ideas and links are up on the website so go in and have a look. Our friend Sue Clarke from Netwaste created them and she and her colleagues had great fun in coming up with some cool ideas. She has put an emphasis on ways that you can be environmentally friendly in your workplace. I nearly died when she asked if our blue @ your library bags were recyclable! We thought we were clever just having them didn't we!!!! Luckily a check of the inside proved they are.

Cheers
